Deliveroo driver stabbed to death yards from his home after returning from night shift

A DELIVERY driver was knifed to death after he was ambushed in his car as he headed home from a night shift, his family have said.

21-year-old Kaan Aslan was attacked just 250 yards from his home in Hackney, East London, after parking his car shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

He suffered a single stab wound and bled to death almost instantly.

Officers in boiler suits could be seen going in and out of a blue forensic tent within a large cordon. Yellow markings were also placed in a road opposite a number of cars.

His cousin Ugur, 33, said: “His dad is a chef, he had finished a shift and gone to bed. The next thing he knew was the police at the door, saying he had been stabbed once in the heart and died instantly. He always finished late and had only just started the job to get pocket money to fund a better life.

“He was a good person. He was a kind caring boy, no way was he ever in any trouble. He has a younger brother who is 11. Kaan was his role model, he is heartbroken.

“He was a big football fan and supported Turkish side Fenerbahçe. He was so friendly and hardworking and respectful. He had a bright future.

“We have no idea if he was robbed or what the reason was for this attack.”

The family moved from Turkey 15 years ago and Mr Aslan attended Hackney Community College. Ugur added: “The family came here for a better life and were working hard for better things. Nothing will be the same for us ever again. There are too many knives on the streets and lives lost here.”

Another cousin, Nese, said: “He was a lovely boy. We are all devastated. He had lots of friends and was just a nice hardworking person.”

An ambulance was also called to the family’s flat, believed to be for his hysterical mum and dad.

A Met spokesman said: “Police we called by London Ambulance Service to reports of a stabbing at Monteagle Way, Nightingale Estate, E5, at around 00.01hrs. At the scene a 21-year-old male was treated by medical professionals for a stab wound to the chest. Sadly he died at the scene at 00.15hrs.

“At this early stage officers retain an open mind regarding motive.”

A Deliveroo spokesperson said: “Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr Aslan.

“We urge any witnesses with information about this horrific crime to come forward and contact the authorities.”
